The Birthday Blog

Music
  • Curtis has a great love of music. Not partial to a particular genre, he bounces along to most any tune. Subconsciously. That’s right – turn on some music and watch Curtis’ foot start tapping. When he was a wee tot, he would also hum quietly to himself as he enjoyed a delicious meal. My theory is that he was a singing angel in the pre-existence.

Tenderness
  • When he was little, he was never shy about holding hands with one of his parents. He was a cuddly little guy. And when he was older, he would take time to lovingly hold babies or play with toddlers.

  • I am going to have to draw on Mom’s memory for this next story, as I wasn’t there. But Mom likes to share the example of how Curtis would pick out the best rock everyday when he walked home from school and give it to her as a gift.
Meticulous

  • I remember when we lived in California and my parents decided to grow a garden in the side yard. We kids were asked to water the garden and to make sure that the water flow was slow enough to soak into the ground without overflowing from the trenches. Curtis, being somewhere around preschool or kindergarten age, was the most dedicated to the cause. He would stay outside for the longest time to squat by the hose and make sure the water flowed ever so slowly down to the end of the trench.

  • During college, Curtis and I lived in the same complex. I would stop by his place for visits and he would be so proud of his clean living space. He went to great lengths on keeping his place clean and orderly.

  • I am always impressed by the level of thoughtfulness that Curtis puts into picking out gifts. Curtis will research different gifts for long periods of time to find the perfect present for the recipient.
Humor
  • Curtis has always had a great sense of humor. Many times he is our comic relief. Sometimes I will wait to watch a comedy until I know Curtis will be around because he isn’t afraid to laugh out loud at the funny parts of the movie.

  • To add to the fun of growing up, Jason and Curtis would often create games to entertain each other. I can’t remember how old they were but at some point they created the imaginary characters Herman, age 2, and Hermetta (commonly known as Etta), age 3. These magical, imaginary characters had all kinds of powers and experienced all kinds of adventures. But mostly I remember how great it was that Herman and Etta flew everywhere.

  • One particular memory of Curtis still makes me laugh when I recall it. This memory of him extends throughout a large part of his childhood. Whenever Curtis would make a mistake or do something goofy, he would always say, “I meant to do that”. Trip on a rock? “I meant to do that.” Add an unusual ingredient to a recipe? “I meant to do that.” Instead of dwelling on the blooper, he would laugh at himself and encourage others to laugh as well.
Thanks for your example and all you bring to our family!
Happy Birthday Curtis!

Dear Jason,

Remember that time we dressed up as grease monkey thugs for Halloween?

And the time we switched outfits so I could be a scout and you could be a pretty princess?

Remember when we went on that sweet boat ride around this lake? Right after you almost let those wolves eat us during the night....

Remember when we went in a photo booth for no apparent reason?

And when you were so muscular from hiking cause we had no time to lose?

Or when we went snorkeling in Hawaii?

Remember when we went to Niagara Falls?

Remember that one time when we hiked out in the middle of a huge swamp and suddenly found this place?

Or that time when we had to get flown out of the middle of nowhere and we got to wear cool flying suits?

And that time you made me this super sweet angel food birthday cake when it was just us and Colie out in Florida?

Me too. Thanks for being such an awesome older brother. I've had a blasty blast with you over the years. Hopefully you aren't too old now to party. Happy Birthday!!!

What Not To Wear

Admittedly, we all make fashion mistakes. But there are some that are made repeatedly. So just to set the record straight on what is not acceptable, please adhere to the following advice:

1. Never wear jeans without a belt. I keep thinkin’ you might lose your pants. Besides, it looks you didn’t finish getting dressed this morning.

2. Never wear socks and sandals simultaneously. I mean, really? Sandals are worn in warmer weather to allow your feet to be cool. And socks are used for…yep, to keep your feet warm in cooler weather. I swear, what illogical train of thought started this craze?

3. Never wear pajamas in public. They might be comfy but people wonder when you last showered. And don’t try to blame it on laundry-day either. We all know better. And if you keep it up, we will refer to you as saggy-baggy.

4. Don’t wait for repeats. You might think that the shirt you loved in the ‘80s will come back in style but trust me; it won’t be the same fashion. In the meantime, why do you continue to wear it once a month while hoping beyond hope that the style will return? Donate it to D.I. and give the teenagers a chance to buy it for their “mock the 80’s style” party.

Now, because Katrina is really the true fashionista, I will turn the time over to her for additional mistakes to avoid…

comeback chatter

Oh, Oh, pick me, pick me! Actually, that’s a tough one cause we are pretty normal. At least I like to think so. But I do recall a situation that meets the topic you have posted below. The other day I was sharing my feelings with someone about eating fish. I was explaining how I liked breaded fish sticks but thought that other seafood was yucky. And then I continued by recounting that, when I was little, we would eat fish sticks sandwiches.

Reaction: Wait, what are fish stick sandwiches? I’ve never even heard of those!

The sandwiches would have three or four fish sticks between two slices of bread that had been spread with a mixture of ketchup and mayonnaise. Mmmm, a tasty meal. Those crunchy, salty fish sticks mixed with soft bread and fry sauce were scrumptious.

Editor’s note: They say that fish is brain food. I should have eaten more fish sandwiches. It would have helped me in college.

"hey...yeah I'm doin alright!"

Oh Hello everyone. Maybe I should re-introduce myself. You see, I have part ownership in this blog. That is to say, part writer-ship. Authorism? Hm. Moving on.
I have an iphone which will on any further mention be referred to as "istar", because that is what I named her. I decided to look up some sweet applications for istar the other day, and I found an app that has blog prompts. This could be pretty useful, seeing as how I don't do much worth blogging about, so here is the topic of the day.
Ahem: "What did you do in your household growing up that you thought was totally normal; that you later found out was considered to be totally strange?"..."something you did where, when you finally did it in front of real, actual people, everyone looked at you. or...said something."
Good question. Um...wait. Can I pass this one along and just have anyone reading this answer? That sounds easier. The only thing I can think of is putting ketchup on my eggs, but since people have told me that was way weird, I've also met a few other strays who do it. MMmm...
Your turn. Melinda?
