I don't know how I could have missed this important feature, but I just noticed that under the "Messaging" menu on my cell phone there is an option called "Chat & Dating". Hmmm, I wonder what kind of outcome that would have? Do other people use that feature to find dates? If I use that feature should I at least make sure the guy lives in my same area code?

Katrina, I was hoping that perhaps, based on my previous dating blunders and bliss, you could provide me with a DO and DON'T guide to my success?

Significant margins of error? Yikes!

Whenever I get on my soapbox and announce to my mom that school is too difficult and I am just going to drop out, my mom will sometimes respond with "Well, the world needs ditch diggers too." That always sounded even more strenuous than school, so I would thoughtfully return to my homework.

Mom, turns out that Obama has the same idea. Did you tune into his speech to Congress last night where he announced the millions of dollars that would dedicated to creating jobs?

“Over the next two years, this plan will save or create 3.5 million jobs. More than 90% of these jobs will be in the private sector - jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges; constructing wind turbines and solar panels; laying broadband and expanding mass transit.”

Maybe he is also hoping that if he threatens to put highly educated, specialized individuals in the trenches, they will come up with a better plan. My fear is that if those types of jobs are created and individuals opt to follow that path rather than seek higher education, where we will find our future leaders?

Please also note that the president's own economists, in a report prepared last month, stated, "It should be understood that all of the estimates presented in this memo are subject to significant margins of error."
Recently overheard:
"My grandparents were really poor."
"Oh, were they farmers?"
Come again? What's that about stereotyping?

Avoid Eye Contact

Do you ever have those moments when you truly hope that if you don’t make eye contact with an individual, that perhaps they won’t notice you? I know it sounds wishful, but I hold out hope for such a miracle. Today was one of those days. My professor announced that we were going to play a “game” based on last night’s reading assignment. The title of the game was projected onto the white screen and he asked how many of us had played the game before. About 1/3 of the class raised their hands. Then he asked how many had never heard of the game. Hmmm..."The prisoners challenge"…yep, never heard of it…I raised my hand along with about ten other students. The professor then glanced in my direction and requested that the guy sitting two chairs down the row from me be a participant. I stared intently at my computer screen in hopes that not meeting his gaze would encourage the professor to select someone from the opposite end of the classroom. Surely he wouldn’t call on me. After all, I admitted to never having played the game! Wrong. I could feel Mr. Professor’s gaze and sensed him waiting for me to look up. Finally giving up, Mr. Professor called out my name, “Melinda, will YOU participate in this game”?

Dang, my theory that avoiding eye contact would make me invisible has been disproved.

The young man and I were the only game participants in front of the class. I gotta get me an invisibility cloak. Clearly, I never learned any superpowers in college.

"Lean Cuisine: Do something good for yourself!"

Most days I eat a Lean Cuisine meal for my lunch. I just noticed that some of the frozen boxes provide a "Wellness Tip". Actually, each "tip" is the same on each box and it reads: Enjoying your meals from a plate and eating more slowly can lead to a more satisfying meal experience.

I don't know about you but it sounds like the typical Lean Cuisine purchaser is a savage beast and needs to learn some manners. I hope the beast knows how to read because that tip certainly is helpful.
I was looking at jobs today, and there was one posted with the title: "Nerds need not apply!" Um...
So I looked into it, just to see if there was a little more humor in the description, but no- everything else was just normal job requirements listed like every other job. Huh. Who knew you could narrow it down so carefully? I was thinking Melinda, you might be able to say that next time someone wants to set you up with someone. Just to be thorough.

My dating theme:
I have to slay the dragons
before I reach my prince.
