Whenever I get on my soapbox and announce to my mom that school is too difficult and I am just going to drop out, my mom will sometimes respond with "Well, the world needs ditch diggers too." That always sounded even more strenuous than school, so I would thoughtfully return to my homework.
Mom, turns out that Obama has the same idea. Did you tune into his speech to Congress last night where he announced the millions of dollars that would dedicated to creating jobs?
“Over the next two years, this plan will save or create 3.5 million jobs. More than 90% of these jobs will be in the private sector - jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges; constructing wind turbines and solar panels; laying broadband and expanding mass transit.”
Maybe he is also hoping that if he threatens to put highly educated, specialized individuals in the trenches, they will come up with a better plan. My fear is that if those types of jobs are created and individuals opt to follow that path rather than seek higher education, where we will find our future leaders?
Please also note that the president's own economists, in a report prepared last month, stated, "It should be understood that all of the estimates presented in this memo are subject to significant margins of error."
